Monash University

June 15, 2008

Since its first intake of students, in 1961, Monash has grown from a single campus at Clayton in Melbourne to eight campuses (including sites in Malaysia and South Africa) and centres in England and Italy.

A wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs are available through the university’s 10 faculties:
art and design; arts; business and economics; education; engineering; information technology; law; medicine, nursing and health sciences; pharmacy; and science.

Monash University Library is one of Australia’s major research libraries, with a collection of more than 2.8 million items, including 10,000 print and 40,000 electronic journals and almost half a million non-book items.

International collaborative opportunities

Internationalism is one of the primary themes for all Monash’s activities as it develops curricula and increasingly locates its operations both physically and virtually around the world.

The university is active in a number of countries, among them Malaysia, South Africa, China, Indonesia, the United Kingdom and Italy. Direct engagement with other countries and regions is fostered through academic cooperation and courseware development, research, staff exchanges and student mobility.

The university’s network of eight campuses and two centres brings an international perspective to learning and provides greater opportunities for collaboration in teaching and research. Each campus provides its own mix of benefits for students, staff and community partners. The university’s Malaysia campus, for example, offers students a high-quality education backed by cutting-edge research. Monash South Africa provides the opportunity to obtain an internationally recognised degree in state-of-the-art facilities with small classes and personal attention.

The university has more than 100 bilateral institutional links that enable academic and research collaboration and student exchange programs. It also offers distributed learning to students in approximately 40 countries.

A vibrant and challenging environment

Monash University offers a vibrant and challenging learning environment to more than 50,000 students, who come from more than 100 nations and speak more than 90 languages. It has one of Australia’s highest levels of on-campus international student enrolments, providing a rich and diverse setting for learning. It is also known, among its students and graduates, for providing a good mix of study and social life.

On-campus students account for about 60 per cent of full-time enrolments and 25 per cent of part-time enrolments. The remainder are involved in off-campus study modes. More than a quarter of students are enrolled in postgraduate programs.

Research and innovation

Monash University researchers make contributions that bring benefits to people all over the world. The university has built a strong international reputation in research, especially in fields such as stem cell science, nanotechnology, reproductive biology, drug development and discovery, and road safety.

For example, Monash University researchers are part of an international team that has developed a synthetic drug described as the biggest breakthrough in malaria treatment for a generation. Other Monash scientists have found that the hormone melatonin could be used to prevent the brain damage caused by asphyxiation during childbirth. Another team of Monash University researchers has developed a drug that dissolves the blood clots that underlie heart attack and stroke, offering hope that a new treatment for these ailments will be commercially available within 10 years.

The university’s strong performance in stem cell science and animal cloning continues, and its scientists have become the first in the world to use a technique known as ’serial nuclear transfer’ to clone a cow.

The university houses more than 90 research centres and is involved with 25 cooperative research centres. It is strengthening its research intensity with projects such as the Monash Science Technology Research and Innovation Precinct, the Australian Stem Cell Centre, and the Monash Institute for the Study of Global Movements. It is also hosting the Australian Synchrotron at its Clayton campus.

Overview of the Australian Education System

June 15, 2008

The Australia Education system offers over 12,000 courses that are recognised internationally and are of world class standards. The tuition fees and living costs to study in Australia compare better than most other countries with quality tuition being more affordable than in the UK, USA or Canada, whilst offering a safe studying environment for international students, and a standard of living that is among the highest in the world.

Australia has the third largest number of international students in the English-speaking world behind the USA and UK, but in many counties Australia is many students’ first choice for international study.

Australia Education has a standardised system of qualifications, and together with great lifestyle opportunities there is no wonder why more than 200,000 international students choose to study in Australia. This together with Australia’s long history of teaching international students is proof enough that international students at Australian universities in Australia and their parents enjoy a level of service and financial protection that is unrivalled.

Australia has a dynamic multicultural society in which students can learn and travel in an English speaking country. There is the added advantages of being in close proximity to Asia, and the fact that international students can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full-time during vacation periods.

All institutions from Australian Schools to Australian Universities, Australian English Colleges to Australian Vocational Education and Training colleges and TAFE’s must be registered with the Australian Government and meet stringent Australian education registration conditions ensuring that courses are of high standards in both ethics and quality.

Emphasis is placed on not only understanding concepts but also on their applications and theories, and the ability to critically examine different viewpoints and arguments, to collect and analyse data, to develop an argument in a logical form and to participate in discussion and debate with other students and teachers. This is an active learning process and not a passive listening one. Should assistance to develop a student’s study skills be required most institutions offer counseling services.

Assessment methods in determining a student’s progress vary between institutions. The students should fully understand how they will be assessed at the time of registering at a particular institution.
